Conclusions from the Golden Globes

Here’s what we can conclude from yesterday’s Avatar thrashing at the Golden Globes. Note that the Golden Globes does not have a great track record with the Academy Awards but they do represent a significant amount of buzz heading into the race.

Full article after the cut…

1. Best Supporting Actor/Actress

Christoph Waltz and Mo’Nique are locks for their respective categories.

2. Best Actress

Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep won’t get to make out on stage at the Oscars; it’s down to either of the two unless Carey Mulligan makes a stunning recovery.

3. Best Actor

Jeff Bridges is gaining leverage over George Clooney but the SAG should clear this one once and for all.

4. Best Picture/Director

Unless somehow The Hangover‘s win turns out to be a foreshadowing of things to come (just kidding), Avatar is now the clear frontrunner with Kathryn Bigelow and The Hurt Locker taking a short step back. Even with its strong precursor awards performance, it’s difficult to pit it against Cameron’s sci-fi behemoth. Add to that, it’s already narrowing in on Titanic‘s box office kingdom – remember money really does matter in this race. Though I do wonder if James and Kathryn will ever get back together.

5. The General Race

What’s going on now is that Up in the Air and Inglourious Basterds look to be quite distant 3rd and 4th placers with adapted and original screenplay respectively looking to be the two’s most possible consolation prizes. District 9, with its recent guilds success should be able to sneak into the top 10 with Star Trek a more unclear possibility. Nine, The Lovely Bones and The Road are all out of the question with Invictus looking weaker each passing day.

I personally haven’t seen all the contenders as of yet but so far my two personal favorites have got to be Inglourious Basterds and Up in the Air. As of now here’s a rundown of my current predictions for the Best Picture 10:

District 9

An Education

The Hurt Locker

Inglourious Basterds

A Serious Man

Star Trek

Up in the Air

Alternate: Invictus
