‘Avatar’ and Box Office Kingdom

If you haven’t been following the news lately, James Cameron’s Avatar just broke the $1 billion mark worldwide this weekend making it only the fifth film in history to do so. Not only that, it’s crossed the $350 US box office threshold in dramatic fashion, receding only 10% to $68 million after $78 million first and $75 million second weekends.

Now that is unprecedented, probably earning Avatar the right to challenge Cameron’s other box office behemoth Titanic. Imagine, the two highest grossing pictures of all time… and only one man behind them.

At first glance Avatar should be a shoo-in to take the March Oscars by storm, if not for the current precursor strength of Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air and Cameron’s ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, not to mention the potential spoiler, the Quentin Tarantino satire Inglourious Basterds.

Whatever happens though, one thing’s for sure – with or without a trophy, Cameron still wins… big time.

More comprehensive Oscar coverage will follow in the coming weeks.
